Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment where pain relief is achieved by inserting sterilized needles into specific areas of the body which stimulates the bodies natural resonse to produce its own painkilling substances.
Acupuncture is often seen as a spiritual form of treatment, however unlike other forms of alternative treatment techniques, patients do not need to believe in it for it to be effective. Although, some patients may have immediate results whilst for others it may take more time before they see the effects. It is widely accepted that a minimum of 4 sessions should be tried to determine if there is going to be a beneficial effect.
The effects are cumulative and because so many areas of the nervous system can be influenced, the body can be treated 'holistically' or as a whole. Good results are often seen when more conventional medicine has failed.
Electro-Acupuncture
Electroacupuncture is quite similar to traditional acupuncture in that the same points are stimulated during treatment. As with traditional acupuncture, needles are inserted on specific points along the body. The needles are then attached to a device that generates continuous electric pulses using small clips. These devices are used to adjust the frequency and intensity of the impulse being delivered, depending on the condition being treated. Electroacupuncture uses two needles at time so that the impulses can pass from one needle to the other. Several pairs of needles can be stimulated simultaneously, usually for no more than 30 minutes at a time.
In the same way practitioners use traditional acupuncture points, they will also incorporate mapping of neuronal pathways, cutaneous and spinal distributions, to bring about a therapuetic response.
