At iPS our PMP is aimed at those living with chronic pain and/or long-term functional impairment affecting both physical and mental health and well-being. A PMP is a suitable treatment choice for those living with persistent pain affecting their quality of life.
Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists beyond the time expected for normal tissue healing, (more than 3 months- ref British Pain Society). The programme combines specialised rehabilitation and physical treatment with psychological tools offering a multi-dimensional approach which research evidence suggests offers the best outcome for PMP participants.

Examples of techniques used in sports massage include effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), compression, friction and tapotement (rhythmic striking), stretching and percussion. These techniques result in increased bloodflow to the tissues, increased elimination of waste products (lactic acid), decreased chance of injury and reduced recovery between workouts. Other benefits of sports massage include increased joint range of motion, increased flexibility, decreased muscle tension and spasm, reduced anxiety and improved mood which can also result in improved sleep patterns.
The content of each PMP is tailored to the individual. An initial assessment and discussion allow the therapist to formulate a schedule of delivery. This schedule will include education, cognitive strategies and health enhancement, exercise and specialist intervention/treatment (as required). The overall aim for each participant is to improve quality and enjoyment of life by.
Graded exposure to physical activity (strength and endurance) to improve function, opportunities to return to work and better mental health.
Cognitive methods to reduce distress, enhance social interaction and challenge undesirable feelings and emotions.
Education on pain theory, body mechanics (posture), relaxation methods and managing flare ups.

To address all the rehabilitation components an average PMP comprises of 36 hours of intervention (ref The British Pain Society, Guidelines for Pain Management Programmes for Adults 2018). This can be delivered in different ways to fit the participants lifestyle and needs.
