What is a Pain Management Programme (PMP)?

Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists beyond the time expected for normal tissue healing, (more than 3 months- ref British Pain Society). The programme combines specialised rehabilitation and physical treatment with psychological tools offering a multi-dimensional approach which research evidence suggests offers the best outcome for PMP participants.

The content of each PMP is tailored to the individual. An initial assessment and discussion allow the therapist to formulate a schedule of delivery. Examples of techniques used in sports massage include effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), compression, friction and tapotement (rhythmic striking), stretching and percussion. These techniques result in increased bloodflow to the tissues, increased elimination of waste products (lactic acid), decreased chance of injury and reduced recovery between workouts.
