Acupuncture involves the insertion of sterilized needles into specific areas of the body. Acupuncture can be used in to treat a wide variety of ailments, but our physiotherapists are specifically trained to use acupuncture for the relief of pain associated with sports injuries, Menopause Symptoms and musculoskeletal conditions.
Until recently, it was widely believed that the beneficial effects of acupuncture were due to placebo. Scientific studies have consistently shown that "believers" and "non-believers" are equally likely to experience pain relief from the insertion of acupuncture needles and that acupuncture needles stimulate the body to produce its own anti-inflammatory and painkilling substances.
The pain relief following acupuncture varies between individuals from nothing at all to complete resolution of symptoms. Some patients may have immediate results whilst for others it may take more time before they see the benefits. It is widely accepted that a minimum of 4 sessions should be tried to determine if there is going to be a beneficial effect.
We offer acupuncture as part of our standard physiotherapy treatment within The IPS clinics. If you specifically wish to have acupuncture, please let us know when you book an appointment so we can ensure you see one of our physiotherapists who are able to perform this treatment.
