What is the iPS Equipment Hire Service?

Our Equipment Hire Service comprises of 'pay as you go' usage of some of our specialist equipment independently without the need of supervision from a physiotherapist.

The equipment hire service allows people to continue their rehab using pieces of equipment that would otherwise be extremely expensive to purchase. It is particularly beneficial if these pieces of equipment may only be required for a few weeks or months. It gives those of whom may have benefitted from some of these pieces of equipment in the inpatient rehab setting, the opportunity to continue using these after discharge home.

Hiring certain pieces of equipment in addition to a current physiotherapy programme can help boost your rehabilitation in a cost effective way.

FES cycle

FES allows muscles that have been paralysed or partially paralysed to move again. When using FES as a treatment, an electrical current is applied to the skin over a nerve, or over the bulk of a muscle, which causes the muscle to contract. We have an FES Arm and Leg Cycle which can be used to improve / maintain strength, fitness and muscle bulk and joint range of movement and reduce pain and spasticity.

The body naturally uses electrical currents to make muscles move. Normally, when a part of the body needs to move, the brain sends electrical signals through the nervous system. The nerves, acting like electrical wires, send these signals to the muscles, telling them to contract. This contraction causes the body part to move. We have a Portable FES Unit which can be used to retrain arm and leg muscles to work during functional tasks including walking, sit-to-stand, stepping up/down, reaching with arm and lifting hand to mouth

Saebo Rejoyce upper limb functional trainer

We are the only physiotherapy clinic in Wales to have a Saebo Rejoyce. The Saebo ReJoyce is an upper extremity rehabilitation workstation designed for patients with impaired function of the arm and hand. It consists of a handset on the end of an arm which is linked to a computer. The handset consists of 6 different grips which are manipulated to control a wide variety of task-oriented computer games. The difficulty of the games can be adjusted to the appropriate level for the patient and baseline measures and progress can be stored in the patient's electronic profile.

It is essential that an Induction Assessment is booked with a qualified physiotherapist prior to hiring the equipment. This is to ensure that the piece of equipment is safe and appropriate for the individual. A safety screening and tutorial into the use of the piece of equipment will also be included in the induction assessment. Following this, the individual will be able to book a day and time that is convenient to come into our clinic and use the equipment independent from a physiotherapy session.
