Shock Wave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment used to treat musculoskeletal pain and promote healing. This therapy uses acoustic waves to target areas of pain, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the body’s natural healing process. At iPS Physiotherapy, we offer Shock Wave Therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to address a wide range of conditions, including tendon and joint pain, sports injuries, and chronic pain conditions.
Shock Wave Therapy is a A non-invasive treatment option, free of medication. It stimulates your body's soft tissues to repair itself and is effective for a number of conditions. The treatment is highly evidence based and recommended by NICE for treatment of chronic tendon pain, that has not responded to more conservative tretament including rest, medication, exercises.
Most research showing significant reduction in chronic tendon pain is based on 3-4 sessions of shockwave. Therefore, we recommend an initial course of 3 sessions. If you are satisfied with the reduction of pain after 3 sessions, then you can stop treatment and continue with an exercise programme recommended by our physiotherapist. If your symptoms are still troublesome after 3 treatments, you can continue up to a total of 6 sessions.
Most research is based 1 session per week, so that is what we recommend.
iPS use the most advanced shockwave machine available – The Dolorclast Radial Shockwave. The The Radial Dolorclast Shockwave machine produces significantly more energy than other less expensive devices. Research has shown that better results are achieved at higher energy shockwaves, and so Shock Wave treatments are more likely to be effective using the Radial Dolorclast. Physiotherapists at IPS have completed accredited training courses giving them an in-depth knowledge of structural anatomy and body mechanics. Those practising ESWT have received additional training in this technique specifically. They will complete a thorough assessment of you, essential to proceed, and deem your suitability for ESWT as a treatment. They will consider your medical history, health status and requirements. They will provide expert advice on a rehabilitation programme for you to complete alongside having ESWT. If ESWT is appropriate for you, and the risks and benefits have been considered, you will be offered information on the technique and have the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have before proceeding. You will then be asked to complete and sign a consent form if you decide to proceed. This confirms that you understand and accept the risks and benefits involved with the treatment.
