Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration - Physiotherapy Treatments

Ultrasound-Guided Aspiration

Ultrasound-guided aspiration is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove excess fluid from joints or cysts.

At iPS Physiotherapy, our specialist physiotherapist, Gareth Tremain, is fully qualified to perform this advanced technique. Using real-time ultrasound imaging, we ensure precision and safety when guiding a fine needle into the affected area for effective fluid drainage.

Removing this fluid can relieve pressure, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility, often leading to immediate symptom relief.

Common causes of joint effusion include:

Combined with Injection Therapy

Ultrasound-guided aspiration is often performed in conjunction with a joint injection to maximise treatment benefits. Once the fluid is removed, a therapeutic substance may be introduced into the joint space. At iPS, we offer a range of injectable options:

What to Expect During the Procedure

The procedure is performed in our clinic and typically takes around 20–30 minutes:

  1. Ultrasound Assessment – We identify the precise location and depth of fluid.
  2. Preparation – The area is cleaned, and local anaesthetic may be applied.
  3. Aspiration – A fine needle is inserted under ultrasound guidance to draw out the fluid.
  4. Optional Injection – If required, medication is injected into the joint post-aspiration.
