High Volume Tendon Stripping Injection is an advanced treatment technique used to relieve chronic tendon pain, particularly for conditions like tendinopathy or tendinitis. At iPS Physiotherapy, we offer this innovative procedure to help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and promote the healing of tendons that have not responded to traditional treatments. The injection combines a large volume of fluid with a stripping technique to break down scar tissue and promote tissue regeneration.
A High-Volume Tendon Stripping Injection involves injecting a high volume of saline (20ml) and a small amount of local anaesthetic (5ml) into the surrounding border of the tendon but not into the tendon itself. Steroid can also be injected if you choose, following detailed discussion with your clinician. The High-Volume Tendon Stripping Injection must be administered under ultrasound guidance for safety and accuracy.
Our specialist physiotherapist Gareth Tremain completed a Masters degree module in 'Joint & Soft Tissue Injections' at Keele University in 2013 and has undertaken extensive training with specialist doctors, sonographers and consultant physiotherapists to hone his skills in Ultrasound-Guided Injections. He offers a range of Ultrasound-Guided Injections, including Cortisone, Hyaluronic Acid, High Volume and Hydrodilatation to treat a wide range of persistent injuries and chronic pain. Gareth will also advise you regarding the most appropriate exercise programme to complement your injection.
The procedure involves the injection of a high volume of saline or corticosteroid solution directly into the affected tendon. This fluid helps to strip the tendon of scar tissue and adhesions, facilitating the healing process. The increased volume of fluid also helps to reduce inflammation and promote better circulation, which is crucial for tendon repair and regeneration.
High-Volume Tendon Stripping Injections are an appropriate treatment option for chronic Achilles and Patellar Tendon pain that has not responded to conservative management. In chronic tendon problems, extra blood vessels and nerve endings form in and around the affected portion of the tendon and it is thought that this contributes to the ongoing pain. It is thought that the pressure from the injection closes off the pathologic increased blood supply and nerve infiltration, leading to reduced pain.
The injection itself can cause some discomfort, but the procedure is generally well tolerated. Local anaesthesia is often used to numb the area before the injection, reducing pain during the procedure.
Recovery time varies depending on the condition and severity of the injury. Most patients experience relief within a few weeks, with improved mobility and less pain. We recommend following a rehabilitation plan provided by our physiotherapists for the best results.
As with any injection, there are potential risks such as infection, swelling, or temporary discomfort. However, the procedure is generally considered safe when performed by trained professionals. Our physiotherapists will discuss any potential risks with you before proceeding.
We want to ensure that all of our patients receive the information they need to make an informed decision about their treatment. If you have any questions or if you require assistance with anything, please let us know.
