Frequently Asked Questions

What is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is an advanced hydrogel injection used to treat knee osteoarthritis. Once injected, it integrates into the lining of your joint, acting as a long-term cushion and lubricant—helping your knee move more smoothly and comfortably.

  • Non-degradable (does not break down quickly)
  • Works within the joint lining
  • Designed for long-term pain relief

Why choose Arthrosamid®?

Clinical evidence shows:

  • 73% of patients report significant improvement after a single injection
  • Results can last 5 years or more
  • Even higher success rates (~80%) in patients under 70

For many people, this means:

  • Less pain
  • Better mobility
  • Reduced reliance on pain medication
  • Potential to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery

Who is Arthrosamid® suitable for?

You may benefit from Arthrosamid® if you:

  • Have knee osteoarthritis causing ongoing pain
  • Haven’t had lasting relief from other treatments
  • Want to stay active without surgery
  • Are looking for a longer-lasting alternative to steroid, hyaluronic acid or PRP injections

Who is it not suitable for?

Arthrosamid® may not be recommended if you:

  • Have very advanced (“bone-on-bone”) knee arthritis
  • Have significant joint deformity or structural damage
  • Are already a clear candidate for knee replacement surgery
  • Have mainly mechanical symptoms (e.g. locking or instability rather than pain)
  • Have an active infection or are unwell
  • Have had recent knee surgery (within 6 months)

What does the procedure involve?

Your treatment is carried out as a simple outpatient procedure:

  1. You’ll take a precautionary antibiotic 1 hour before your Arthrosamid injection – this will be prescribed and supplied prior to your injection
  2. The knee is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic
  3. If your knee is swollen, the fluid will be drained under ultrasound guidance immediately prior to the administration of the Arthrosamid
  4. Using ultrasound guidance, 6ml of hydrogel is precisely injected into the knee joint
  5. You rest briefly—and can usually leave within 15 minutes

What does recovery look like?

Recovery is straightforward:

  • Rest on the day of the procedure
  • Return to normal daily activities the next day
  • Avoid strenuous activity for the first 1–2 weeks

When will you feel improvement?

  • Some patients notice changes within 10 days
  • Most improve steadily over 4–12 weeks
  • Benefits can last several years

Is it safe?

Arthrosamid® has been used in medical applications since 2001 and is considered safe when performed by a trained clinician.

Complications are rare, but may include:

  • Infection
  • Temporary pain or swelling
  • Lack of improvement (or very rarely worsening symptoms)

All risks will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Will it hurt?

The knee is numbed beforehand, so most patients feel only mild pressure during the injection.

How long does it last?

Many patients experience relief for several years, with studies showing benefit beyond 5 years.

Does it work for everyone?

No treatment works for everyone, but around 3 in 4 patients report meaningful improvement.
